SKEPTICS SEEK EXPLANATIONS FOR UFO SIGHTING

WHITIANGA. A mystery light show transfixed Mercury Bay residents on Friday night, just five days after three unidentified flyings objects were spotted above the town.
At about 8.30pm, a dozen resident of Comers Rd near Coroglen witnessed a light show they cannot explain, and they are looking for answers.
One man, who doesn't want to be named because "people will think we're crazy", says they spotted strange, circular lights going in and out of the clouds.
"We were looking down the river towards the Bay; this all seemed to be happening over Whitianga way. the circle were twisting and turning in the clouds like discs,
sometimes turning upside down and with a whole lot of circular dots around them. It went on for a long time - long enough for us to call a bunch of people. and everyone saw it."
They watched it until about 10pm, but didn't take photos. The man says it was white light like moonlight, but the moon had not risen and the shapes and patterns were too defined and regular.
He says they are all skeptics and open-minded. "We just want an explanation because there must be one. Most of all, it looked like a laser-light display, but there were no shafts of light from the ground.
It's a real mystery and I'd love someone to tell me what it was. If it was someone playing with lights, it was a fluid performance and very well done."
On February 16 three residents saw two silver discs and a mustard-coloured bullet shape object speed across the sky. Four nights earlier, a Thames couple saw a bullet shaped object above their house.
New Zealand Defence Force public relations spokesman Squadron Leader Rick Cullinane says the air force had no craft in any of the areas at the time the sightings were reported.
