Date: Friday, January 02, 2004 11:39:02

Jeff, I found a listing of the Pile coat of arms granted to Gabriell
Pile of Bupton in Wiltshire. The description includes the arms for
Horne and Fraine. I am trying to assemble some kind of drawing
that I will forward to you when I finish.

Neat - Please include the sources for references. As you see in the margin of this email is the Pile coat of arms I found this one generated by the MODERN site for "Coats of Arms" but couldn't find where or how they achieved this.?????

Image

I had a brief look in the very large edition on "Coats of Arms" but didn't buy it as it was v. expensive. Didn't see any registered in that edition.
I believe this is only a commercial version for themselves from a reference ??? somewhere.

Actual accredited "Coats of Ams" have a history and much more information behind them and are registered.

Jeff

If you view this link Theory on Piles in Barbados

You will see some more information on arms plus these two images

Jeff, I found it. I noticed in the Pile Family of Barbadoes,
the correct coat of arms for the Pile family is used.
I am attaching two coats of arms; one for Fraine and
one for Horne. These are found on the Pile arms of Gabriell
Pile of Bupton.

Pile Coat of arms from descriptions

Jeff, here is the Pile arms I put together from the description.

=======================================
Steve,

NOTE there are a number of similarities used on this PILE coat of Arms from this description to the one of PYLE coat of arms as shown on Godwin Arnolds chart - (SHOWN ABOVE) as reported used on Thomas Pyles monument at Kings Lynn (Inf from Vicar of All Saints Ch.)

Could there be a connection or similar grant to this side of the family in the same time frame?

Jeff

Pile - Pyle Coat of Arms - information

Your source registered the Pile coat of Arms as 1623.

The Pyle coat of arms used on Thomas Pyle b. Jan 26 1674 - Vicar of St Margarets Kings Lynn & c & c Prebendary of Salisbury - which I presume is the monument it is used on - isn't much later. And may have been granted around his death.

In addition to the "Head stone" of Conrade Pile of Barbados the inscription reads:

"In memory of
CONRADE PILE
of Brighton, in this Parish
who departed this life February 3rd 1864
aged 81 years and 9 months
A faithful and affectionate husband
A kind and generous father
A liberal benefactor; An upright man
An humble Christian
To him this Chapel (St. Luke)
owes its existence
"The Memory of the Just is Blessed" Prov.X. 7
This tablet is erected by his widow
for sixty years his wife"

Also the "Family Moto" is

Motto: - Gaudet Tentamine Virtus

Gaudet - to rejoice, take delight
Tentamine - judgement, temptation, duration, attack, trial
Virtus - manliness, excellence, character, worth, courage

I believe this family crest/Coat of Arms shown in the headstone is the same as that of Francis Pile Baronet of Compton created September 12, 1628 for service to King Charles I

Jeff

this is an email I receivied from Mary Gleadall from Barbados. This information goes with the Marble Headstone of Conrad Pile of Barbados

Fairbairns Book of Crests, London 1905
PILE:
On a ducal coronet ( sometimes termed a "Cinier" or crest coronet, frequently used instead of a wreath, or as a collar; it has three leaves, unless blazoned as having a greater number) or , a pelican with wings addorsed (placed back to back) vulning (wounding, particularly applied to the pelican which is depicted wounding her breast) herself proper (borne in the proper or natural colours).

"Gaudet Tentamine Virtus" = "Virtue exults in the trial" (Motto of the Legg, Legge Family)

Is that any help?

Mary in Barbados

Thanks Mike for the information - sorry slow in answering as have been in hospital for opening up my prostate - worked. Steve has sent other Pyle information which I have to upload to. We hope that this information is also helping you. Kiwi Jeff

Knights of Edward I - William de Hornes

Jeff, I went back and looked again at the Knights of Edward I
and found William de Hornes mentioned. The first reference
was "Dering" (Dering's Roll circa 1280) mentions knights of
Kent and Sussex. I am attaching the page.

Have you found any reference to MOTTOs

In a message dated 2/23/04 8:01:19 PM Pacific Standard Time,
mail from me to Steve writes:
<< Have you found any reference to MOTTOs for those early "arms" ? Usually
descriptions also carried the issued mottos with them >>
Not yet, I did pick up descriptions of arms for the following:

====================================

SOTEWELL of Chute - Visitation of Wiltshire 1623, page 185
Gu (red), a chevron between in chief two mulletts, and in base a lion
rampant or (gold); a crescent for a difference
(Anne Sotewell married John Benger Jr.)

====================================
DUCKETT - Visitation of Wiltshire 1623, page 51
Sable (black), a saltire argent (silver), a mullet for a difference

====================================
LEVERICH -
Ar (silver), with a chevron sable (black) between three plow shares

======================================

Not sure if the Leverich is one of ours just yet. I am going to check
the Visitations of Suffolk, Kent and London for Horne to see if any
match our arms.
Keep Digging,
Steve
