RAILWAY FLAG STATIONS
In February 1897 regulations were brought in allowing settlers to post letters at Railway Flag Stations at ordinary rates of postage. Up to this time posting facilities on Guard’s Vans had been in operation but letters posted in these boxes had always been charged at Late Fee Rate. A service was therefore instigated to assist settlers who were not close to a Post Office as it was found necessary to send by the first train, advice to the various firms regarding goods being railed or about to be supplied.
The trains did not normally stop at these Flag Stations unless they were flagged down in order to pick up passengers or collect wagons hence the term Flag Stations.
Letters from these Stations could be sent at ordinary rates of postage provided the envelope was endorsed “Posted at ……….Flag Station”.
No envelopes in the area covered of this type, have been seen by the author, but it is assumed that the following is a list of possibilities.
