TRAVELLING POST OFFICE – NORTH CANTERBURY

The route was renamed Travelling Post Office, North Canterbury on 1st February 1908 and new datestamp was brought into use. The type was C-Class, but in place of the usual time band, were letters denoting OUTWARDS on mail from Christchurch and INWARDS on mail from Culverden.

This service continued until 30th September 1909, when the Travelling Post Office carriage was withdrawn from the Culverden line.

The datestamp used on the North Canterbury service were apparently then transferred to the Christchurch – Studholme Travelling Post Office Van and used there as relief datestamp, so that any postmarks noted after 30th September 1909 were used south of Christchurch.
